I’m not going to pretend like I did t just jump from my Glasgow article to this one. So I won’t give a huge intro, but I will say this; Edinburgh is a real-life Game of Thrones set. It’s crazy you can just visit or live here. It looks like you will be devoured by a dragon at any moment. I love it. The food is obviously excellent, particularly the baked goods. So I will give you what I have and hope you have a great place to start. Let’s go.
As far as I can tell, this is a staple in Edinburgh. The menu crafted by Chef Tom Kitchin features some beautifully crafted Scottish traditional dishes. Everything had been elevated just a bit to please a more posh crowd. But at its core, this place is pure comfort food. The dining room is gorgeous, and the service is fantastic. I went with the steak pie. I thought it would be too heavy, but the portion was perfect. The pie crust provided s wonderful texture when mixed with the braised pot roast and vegetables. It was served with thick, buttery mashed potatoes. We also got a special mushroom toast dish. The foraged mushrooms were roasted and served on sourdough with a runny egg. Absolutely delightful. Other menu items included pork terrine, haggis, and fish pie. If you want to understand Scottish food at a glance, this is where you need to go.
I am a massive fan of brunch. Anywhere that serves eggs on toast is like cat nip for me. Honeycomb and co spoke to all of my sensibilities, and it was indeed a memorable experience. The service was outstanding. We were greeted by a host who kept up conversation throughout the meal. Our server was equally friendly and attentive. The dining room was gorgeous and perfect for a relaxing morning coffee or a bite. But obviously, the food was the best part. I got the shakshuka which was damn near perfect. Served in a tiny skillet with toast and streaky bacon. The sauce was perfectly spiced with fennel and carrot to give a unique flavor. The eggs, feta, and yogurt provided an excellent and rich base. Then, the toast and bacon allowed the ultimate eating experience after combining every element. Great flavor. Too many delicious items to choose from. But I’ll bet they’re all fantastic.
Round square Coffee
I walked miles to get to this lovely cafe. The baristas there serve up beautifully smooth lattes with buttery espresso and delightful baked goods. But an employee at Roundsquare goes out of her way to make fantastic latte art. Other baristas may opt to finish a beverage with the traditional flower or spiral design. But this legend went the extra mile to create small critters and animals from the perfectly steamed milk. I get a latte and a pastry every single morning. It’s important to me and even more so when I can tell that care went into the product. A foam lion atop my favorite beverage is about as full of care. Combined with a delicious raspberry cheesecake brownie, I was in heaven. This is worth a special visit.
Pizza Geeks
I don’t have photos from Pizza Geeks because I drunkenly inhaled my pie before I thought to document it. But you’ll have to trust me when I say it was beautiful. Naturally leavened dough charred to perfection and presented in a way that would make any Neapolitan pizzaiolo proud. I chose a pizza topped with black pudding as well. You may balk at this idea, but I assure you it was incredible. What’s better than pizza? Pizza with black pudding. If you’re drunk in Edinburgh and want some pizza, you need to do this. Don’t skip on the secret ingredient, either.
