Restaurant Review: Kuya Lord

Kuya Lord

5003 Melrose Avenue
Los Angeles, California 90038

What a breath of fresh air. Kuya Lord was one of my favorite dining experiences anywhere to date. But I’m supposed to be discerning so let me elaborate. It’s hard to pick anything apart that makes you smile as you eat it. So why even try? Kuya Lord is a restaurant I’ve wanted to try since its opening. The small spot specializes in Filipino food served simply. Beautifully cooked meat, decadent rice, and plenty of fun accessories. The only thing I hate is trying to find parking on Western. I was greeted by the owner with a huge smile. I expressed my excitement and fandom for her establishment. She gave me my food and assured me I’d be back. Anyway. I’ve given away the ending of the story. The whole experience was outstanding. But let’s move on to the food.

The menu is straightforward. Proteins are separated into rice bowls or trays with a few entrees and starters peppered in. I ordered the Tapas (savory beef) and chicken bowls. Each is substantial but not over the top, served with Java rice, Achara, veggies, a sunny egg, and your protein. The presentation, even for to go, is beautiful. Everything is aligned perfectly with a perfect aesthetic for Instagram feeds. The egg balances perfectly through several angles, but once I cracked into it, the yolk was perfectly runny. I just felt like I was dreaming.

The tapas bowl was my favorite. The beef is sliced thin and slightly chewy but still rich and decadent. It has sweet notes paired with the savory reminiscent of teriyaki. But it feels more complex due to the tang and distinctive flavor. The chicken was fantastic also. The char-grilled meat was perfectly tender, and the marinade was irresistible. Every bite was an explosion of flavor. These elements, with decadent bites of Java rice and Achara, were nearly too much to handle in the best way. I just love Filipino food. But when such simple things are made to be complex, the only explanation is love, care, and quality. Even in a takeaway container devoured in a parking lot Kuya Lord is my best meal in LA so far.

I thrive on authenticity. You can’t fake that. When food is made from the soul, it’s apparent. Kuya Lord is important because it’s pure. I’ll be here way too often, and my goal is to get the recipe for that Java rice. I’m sick of chicken and plain white. Go brave the traffic and also go sit in the restaurant. That’s my move next time. Catch me sporting a Kuya T-shirt next time you see me too.
